this large scale mural in the library of Barlby Primary School in Ladbroke Grove, West London. The mural is in frieze form, running around the base of the enormous skylight that fills the centre of the room. Wherever you are sitting in the library, you can look up and see part of the mural! I was asked to include familiar scenes from the local area, such as Portobello Road, the Notting Hill Carnival and the Westway... ok, so the Westway was my idea :) There are a lot of other themes incorporated into the frieze. At one end of the room, over the reference section, the imagery relates to the topics the children study. ie. travel, space, different types of animals, dinosaurs and mythical beasts. And at the other end, over the fiction section, are vignettes inspired by different stories. ie. Little Red Riding Hood, Hansel and Gretel, Sleeping Beauty, and of course, the Gruffalo had to make an appearance. I used a bright, graphic style, inspired by children's book illustration from the 50's and 60's - a fitting tribute to the room's purpose. p.s. Spot the space pugs! friend Hannah Ahmed, a graphic designer. Our cards are available to buy here :) We first met at university in 1997 and after pursuing individual careers in fashion and book publishing, have joined forces to create SKILL, a long dreamt of collaboration. Our brand name SKILL is a childhood playground brag that continues to make us laugh and sums up the spirit and imagination behind everything we design and produce. Our designs celebrate the familiarity of everyday life, finding the charm and humour in the mundane, be it a hammer, a penguin or cheeky compliment! Playground humour, talking about the weather and disliking vegetables are all things the great British public can relate to, and can now share in a new way via our greetings cards! All our cards are hand printed using the GOCCO system, a cult Japanese desktop screen printer that gives a tactile quality to the end product. Each card is individually hand printed in small batch productions and therefore unique. Colourful line illustrations, calligraphy and polkadots are the signatures of SKILL designs, as they are qualities that we find make the best use of the GOCCO system and our own particular skills.
